There are many potential sites for small hydroelectric schemes in Zambia that could contribute to increased installed capacity and the national generation output. Small hydro power development remains a key priority for the Zambian government given that an estimated 6,000 MW of hydro power potential remains untapped. To help ameliorate the very low access to electricity, especially in rural areas, the Ministry of Energy launched the GET FiT Zambia Small Hydro tender in early 2019. This aims to support the development of small hydro and solar projects through a competitive bidding process.
